Shocking Stat: $75 Billion Stolen by Romance Scam Syndicates Since 2020!

Romance scam syndicates have stolen an estimated $75 billion since 2020, according to a 2024 University of Texas study. These criminal operations, often based in Southeast Asia, exploit hundreds of thousands of trafficked individuals to carry out their frauds. The United Nations reported in 2023 that over 120,000 people were being held in Myanmar for forced scamming, making it the largest hub for these frauds in the region. The scams involve forming romantic relationships online to extract money from victims, with syndicates using social media and dating apps for recruitment and targeting. Technology platforms, including social media, messaging apps, and cryptocurrencies, play a significant role in enabling these scams. Despite efforts by some countries to disrupt these operations, the syndicates continue to adapt and thrive, often using advanced technology like Starlink and AI to enhance their schemes.
