According to recent data, an alarming 75% of independent game developers quit their projects within five years. This staggering statistic highlights the challenges faced by solo developers and small teams in the gaming industry.
The numbers are stark: a whopping 62% of indie games fail to generate significant revenue, with only 12% achieving moderate success. Furthermore, a mere 2% of indie games reach mainstream popularity, defined as sales exceeding $1 million.
These statistics underscore the difficulties faced by independent game developers in sustaining their projects over time. The pressure to produce high-quality content while managing limited resources can be overwhelming, leading many to abandon their projects altogether.
The trend is concerning, as it may lead to a shortage of skilled professionals in the industry. With 75% of indie developers quitting within five years, there is a risk that vital specialists will leave the field, exacerbating the problem.
These statistics serve as a warning to the gaming industry: investing in the long-term success and sustainability of independent game development is crucial to ensuring a steady supply of innovative games for players.

I remember I wanted to be a game dev when I was a kid. Thank God I lost all passion and ambition. No but really this fucking sucks. Seems like every time these devs start to feel a semblance of job security, the rug gets pulled and all their hard work goes down the drain.

That’s why most senior and lead devs go to indies. Because they don’t have to deal with the BS like they used to deal with. More time/freedom with their family, less crunch and better schedules.
