75% of Energy Conference Focuses on Nuclear and Fusion, Ignoring Climate Change

At the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit held just outside Washington, DC, 75% of the opening session’s focus was on nuclear power and fusion technologies. US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and acting ARPA-E director Daniel Cunningham emphasized American energy dominance. Climate change, a central topic two years ago, was not mentioned once during the opening session. Wright praised companies like Commonwealth Fusion Systems and Zap Energy, as well as small modular reactors. In contrast, renewable energy sources like wind and solar were only discussed in terms of their inconsistency, despite being among the cheapest methods of generating electricity today. The conference showcased cutting-edge innovations in energy technology, from next-generation batteries to metal-mining plants. However, recent federal government actions, including mass layoffs and attempts to freeze spending from the Inflation Reduction Act, have created uncertainty among researchers and industry experts.
