A new women’s professional basketball league, Unrivaled, kicks off this Friday. The league, co-founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, has secured $35 million in funding and deals with a dozen sponsors. Unrivaled will feature six teams playing 3-on-3 games over two months, culminating in a playoff tournament. The league offers a total salary pool of over $8 million, averaging about $242,000 per player, which is higher than the WNBA’s current salary range of $66,079 to $249,244. Players will also receive equity and revenue shares. The league’s first season includes 36 participants, all former WNBA players, with 15 being 2024 WNBA All Stars. Unrivaled aims to capitalize on the growing interest in women’s basketball, following the WNBA’s record-breaking viewership of over 54 million unique viewers last season.
