6v6 Format in Overwatch 2: 10% of Playtime Sparks Esports Debate

The Overwatch 2 esports community is buzzing with discussions about reverting to the 6v6 format. This interest was reignited after the Classic experimental event, with the original mode set to return in quickplay and ranked in Season 15. The 6v6 format, which was swapped for 5v5 in Overwatch 2, has been a topic of debate due to balance issues, particularly for solo tanks. In Season 14, the 6v6 limited-time run captured nearly 10% of the total community playtime. Game director Aaron Keller noted the demand for this team size but highlighted the uncertainty of its scale. A mini-competitive season of 6v6 will start midseason 15 to gauge its viability. Despite the excitement, the esports scene remains cautious, with pros like Xander Hawk Domecq praising the format’s challenge and mental stimulation. However, the transition back to 6v6 would require significant adjustments in team composition, strategy, and communication, especially with the addition of double tanks.
