65,000 Federal Workers Resigned: Here’s What the Numbers Really Mean

The U.S. federal government, with its vast workforce, sees significant annual turnover. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, approximately 65,000 federal employees have resigned recently. This number, while substantial, is part of a larger picture. Each year, the government also terminates about 50,000 to 60,000 employees for various reasons, including disciplinary issues, performance, or expired appointments. Additionally, around 3,400 federal workers die annually while still employed. Despite these departures, the federal government hires around 240,000 new employees each year to fill these vacancies and meet operational needs. This turnover rate highlights the dynamic nature of federal employment, where resignations, terminations, and new hires are a regular part of the workforce management.
