The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has gained access to a payroll system that processes salaries for approximately 276,000 federal employees across numerous agencies. This access allows DOGE visibility into sensitive employee data, including Social Security numbers, and facilitates easier hiring and firing of workers. DOGE workers achieved this access after a two-week effort, succeeding over the weekend. Following the access, two IT officials who had objected to the move were placed on administrative leave and are under investigation for their workplace behavior. Despite court orders to restrict DOGE’s access to certain federal records, the agency continues to expand its reach into federal systems.
