Over two years, major shipping firms transported over half a million tonnes of beef and leather from Brazilian slaughterhouses linked to tropical forest destruction. Data revealed that 12 meat plants, operated by Brazil’s top three beef companies, were connected to deforestation covering an area three times the size of London from 2021-23. These products were shipped to Europe, the US, and China in 2022-23. Additionally, around 80% of Brazil’s major beef and leather organizations, along with their financiers, have not committed to stopping deforestation. Meanwhile, a UN report highlighted that nearly 78% of global land became permanently drier between 1990 and 2020, with 4.3 million square kilometers of previously humid landscapes turning into drylands. This year, food prices rose globally due to factors like climate change, extreme weather, and geopolitical conflicts.
