Cutting Methane Emissions by 30%: The Future of Cattle Burping Supplements

In a significant stride towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, companies like DSM-Firmenich, Blue Ocean Barns, Rumin8, and Symbrosia are developing innovative solutions to curb methane emissions from cattle. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, accounts for 11% to 20% of global climate pollution from livestock. DSM-Firmenich’s Bovaer, a feed supplement, has been approved by the FDA and can reduce methane emissions by 30% in dairy cattle and even more in beef cattle. This supplement works by inhibiting an enzyme that converts hydrogen and carbon dioxide into methane during digestion. Bovaer is now available in over 55 countries, including major markets like Australia, Brazil, and the EU. Meanwhile, startups are exploring red seaweed-based products that could potentially reduce methane levels even further. These efforts are part of a broader push to tackle climate change, with the potential for farmers to earn greenhouse-gas credits through voluntary carbon markets. However, the industry still needs to address other significant environmental impacts, like deforestation, to make a comprehensive impact.
