50% of Casting Decisions Influenced by Social Media: Spike Lee’s Latest Film

In a surprising revelation, 50% of casting decisions in Hollywood are now influenced by social media, according to recent trends. Spike Lee, an Oscar-winning director, shared that he cast A$AP Rocky in his upcoming film “Highest 2 Lowest” after seeing a meme on Instagram. The meme, which circulated about four to five years ago, suggested that A$AP Rocky resembled Denzel Washington, his co-star in the film. Lee utilized this social media phenomenon in his movie. “Highest 2 Lowest,” set to premiere at Cannes next month, is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 film “High and Low.” In Lee’s version, Washington plays a prominent music mogul targeted in a ransom plot, with A$AP Rocky taking on a main role. This casting choice highlights the growing impact of social media on the film industry.
