$5.425 Million Settlement: The Numbers Behind Yahoo’s Human Rights Fund Mismanagement

A lawsuit against Yahoo for the mismanagement of a human rights fund for Chinese dissidents concluded with a $5.425 million settlement. This settlement allocates at least $3 million to a new fund aimed at providing humanitarian assistance to individuals from the People’s Republic of China imprisoned for exercising their freedom of speech. The original Yahoo Human Rights Fund (YHRF), established with $17.3 million, was intended to support those imprisoned for online free speech. However, the fund’s management by the Laogai Research Foundation resulted in only $650,000, or 4%, being spent on direct support for dissidents. The remainder of the settlement will be distributed among six former prisoners, with five receiving $50,000 each and the lead plaintiff receiving $55,000. The new fund will be managed by Humanitarian China, which has previously distributed $2 million in aid to Chinese dissidents and their families.
