5.5% Sales Drop: Starbucks Struggles While Industry Rebounds

Starbucks is set to report its quarterly earnings, initiating a series of announcements from restaurant companies. Industry data indicates a strong finish to the year, with same-store sales growing in October and November, despite a dip in December due to a late Thanksgiving. Casual-dining chains like Red Robin and California Pizza Kitchen are showing signs of recovery, with Red Robin expecting a 3.4% increase in fourth-quarter comparable restaurant revenue. However, Starbucks and McDonald’s face challenges. Starbucks, under new leadership, is expected to report a 5.5% decline in same-store sales, while McDonald’s dealt with an E. coli outbreak linked to its Quarter Pounder burgers, affecting sales in November but showing signs of recovery in December. Despite these setbacks, restaurant executives are optimistic about 2025, citing improved consumer sentiment and wage growth.
