The Cannes Film Festival’s lineup this year showcases a fresh and diverse selection of films. Out of a record 2,909 feature submissions, 32% were from women directors, and one third were first films. The festival received submissions from 168 countries, including a potential first from Nigeria. Seven of the 19 films in Competition are first-time Palme d’Or contenders, and the average age of directors in Competition is notably lower than in previous years. The festival opens with a debut film by a female director, Amlie Bonnins’ “Leave One Day,” marking a historic first. Six women directors are featured in Competition, with the possibility of reaching the record of seven set in 2023. The UCR section highlights emerging filmmakers, including buzzed-about first movies from Harris Dickinson and Akinola Davies Jr. Only one film in Competition hails from Asia, a surprising statistic given the festival’s global reach.
