In a historic shift, 2024 saw an equal split in the top-grossing films with 42% featuring female protagonists and 42% male protagonists. This parity, according to Dr. Martha Lauzen’s “It’s a Man’s (Celluloid) World” report, marks a significant change from previous years. In 2023, only 28% of films had female leads, down from 33% in 2022 and 31% in 2021. Despite this milestone, the overall representation of women in film remains uneven. The percentage of female characters in speaking roles only increased from 35% in 2023 to 37% in 2024, and major female characters rose from 38% to 39%. Ageism persists, with the percentage of female characters dropping from 35% in their 30s to 16% in their 40s, while male characters increased from 25% to 31% in the same age range. Over 72% of films still featured more male than female characters in speaking roles.
