42-Year-Old CineMart Presents 20 Feature Films and 4 Immersive Works

The Rotterdam Film Festival’s IFFR Pro industry program, now under the direction of Marten Rabarts, is set to showcase 20 feature film projects and four immersive works at CineMart from February 2 to 5. Additionally, 12 works-in-progress will be featured in the Darkroom strand. Rabarts, with his extensive international experience, aims to return to the festival’s roots by focusing on filmmakers from underrepresented regions and projects that challenge cinematic norms. The selection process was influenced by the Floodlight Summit in Colombia, emphasizing stories that address current global issues. Key projects include “Enkop (The Soil)” by Kenyan filmmaker Angela Wanjiku and “Eziko” by South African directors Babalwa Baartman and Jenna Cato Bass. The festival also highlights the anxiety within the global LGBTQ community through films like Cheryl Dunye’s “Black Is Blue.” Despite the focus on serious themes, Rabarts ensures that the projects are not didactic but engaging and sensitive. The Hubert Bals Fund has supported several of these projects, reinforcing the festival’s commitment to diverse and meaningful cinema.
