The first weekend of 2025 is projected to rake in an impressive $105 million, a 22% increase from the $85.9 million of 2024’s opening weekend. This makes it the second-highest post-Covid opening, just behind 2023’s $106.2 million. Disney’s ‘Mufasa’ leads the pack with an estimated $24.5 million, while ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ follows with $20.7 million. Despite the promising start, these figures are still far from the pre-Covid highs, like 2016’s $219.5 million led by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. The top five movies are expected to gross nearly $78 million, a significant jump from last year’s $56 million. ‘Mufasa’ is set to hit $169.2 million by Sunday, and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ is close to surpassing its franchise predecessor with $187 million. Meanwhile, ‘Moana 2’ is inching towards the $1 billion mark worldwide.
