$5 Million Redesign Propels Sonic Franchise to $1.2 Billion

Paramount Pictures invested $5 million to redesign Sonic the Hedgehog after fans criticized the initial trailer. The redesign, which included bringing back Sonic’s iconic white gloves and red shoes, led to a successful franchise. The first “Sonic the Hedgehog” film opened with $58 million at the box office, eventually earning $146 million domestically and $302 million globally. Subsequent films performed even better, with “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” grossing $190 million domestically and $403 million worldwide, and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” reaching $235 million in the U.S. and $485 million globally. The franchise has expanded to include a “Knuckles” series on Paramount+, which garnered over 11 million viewing hours in its first 28 days. The success has also boosted Sonic’s licensing business from $70 million to over $1 billion annually. A fourth film is planned for 2027, with the team focusing on character development and fan engagement.
