Mufasa: The Lion King will be available on Disney+ starting March 26, following a 96-day theatrical run. This window is slightly shorter than the 105 days for Moana 2. Despite a slow start, Mufasa outperformed Sonic the Hedgehog 3, earning $250.4M in the U.S. compared to Sonic’s $235.8M, and $712.5M worldwide against Sonic’s $487.8M. The film, directed by Barry Jenkins, initially opened in second place with $35.4M, behind Sonic’s $60.1M. However, it later claimed the top spot in its third and fifth weekends. With a $200M production cost, Mufasa did not lose money for Disney. The story, told through flashbacks, follows Mufasa’s journey from an orphaned cub to king, with Lin-Manuel Miranda contributing several songs.
