In 2024, TV production saw a 7% decline from the previous year, according to Luminate’s year-end analysis. Despite this, broadcast TV showed resilience with a 25% year-over-year increase, recovering faster than streaming and cable. Cable TV, however, hit a new low with a 15% drop in original series, attributed to a shift towards streaming. Streaming production in the U.S. remains significantly lower than pre-strike levels, with Netflix producing 22% fewer U.S.-based series than in 2022. Prime Video is the exception, maintaining its U.S. production output. The overall number of episodes and hours of programming has decreased by 20% from 2023 to 2024. Drama series saw a decline from 3,400 episodes in 2019 to 2,492 in 2024, while comedy, animated, and unscripted genres suffered even more, with unscripted episodes down 33% since 2022 and comedy episodes down 47% over five years. Netflix dominated with seven of the top 10 most-watched series, led by “Fool Me Once” with 12 billion minutes watched.
