The statistics surrounding AI companions are staggering. Character.AI, a platform offering such services, receives 20,000 queries per second, which is about a fifth of Google’s estimated search volume. Users spend four times longer interacting with these companions than with ChatGPT. On another site, active users average more than two hours per day conversing with bots, with most users being from Generation Z. These figures highlight the growing engagement with AI companions. In response to these trends, California state senator Steve Padilla, alongside Megan Garcia, will announce a bill on Tuesday aimed at forcing tech companies to implement safeguards for children using AI companions. This follows other legislative efforts, including a bill from California State Assembly member Rebecca Bauer-Kahan to ban AI companions for those under 16, and a New York bill to hold tech companies liable for chatbot-related harm.

This is a fascinating and extremely well-written narrative speculation (or “scenario forecast”) about how #AGI and then superintelligent #AI might emerge along a very aggressive timeline. I doubt that things will happen this fast…but highly recommended!
