2.5 Million People: TSA Ends Shoe Removal Rule

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has ended its 20-year-old rule requiring travelers to remove their shoes at US airport checkpoints. This change is effective immediately and nationwide, according to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The average daily screenings last year reached nearly 2.5 million people.

The TSA dropped the shoe removal requirement due to “intelligence pointing to a continuing threat” after Richard Reid’s attempted shoe bomb in 2001. Travelers in the PreCheck program have already been allowed to leave their shoes on, and this change aims to facilitate smooth travel for millions of daily passengers.

Improved technology and upcoming events like the World Cup are expected to bring an influx of travelers, according to Noem. Major airlines such as American, Delta, and United have welcomed the decision, citing its potential to streamline travel processes.
