800+ Flights Canceled: The Statistical Impact of Heathrow’s Fire-Induced Shutdown

A fire at a nearby electrical substation led to a power outage at London’s Heathrow Airport, resulting in the cancellation of over 800 flights on Friday. The airport, Europe’s busiest, resumed operations late that day. More than 120 flights were already airborne when the closure was announced, leading to diversions or returns to their starting points. Nearly three-quarters of scheduled departures, totaling 500 flights, and half of the arrivals, 300 flights, were canceled. British Airways, the most affected airline, canceled over half of its Friday schedule. The fire also disrupted power to about 16,000 homes, with electricity restored to all but 4,900 by 8 a.m. GMT. Heathrow typically sees 1,300 takeoffs and landings daily and handled a record 83.9 million passengers last year, a 6% increase from 2023. Additionally, the airport manages over 4,000 tons of cargo daily, with 1.4 million tonnes transported in 2023, 90% of which was carried in passenger aircraft holds.
