12th Seed Shocks No. 5: McNeese’s Historic Upset by the Numbers

In a stunning NCAA tournament upset, the 12th-seeded McNeese State Cowboys defeated the No. 5 Clemson Tigers 69-67. The Cowboys led 31-13 at halftime, nearly setting a record for the lowest scoring first half in tournament history. Clemson shot a mere 20.8% in the first half, rattled by McNeese’s unexpected 2-3 zone defense, a strategy they had not used all season. This victory marked McNeese State’s first NCAA tournament win. The Cowboys, with a season record of 28-6, had previously won the Southland Conference championship to secure their tournament spot. The game’s intensity caused McNeese’s website to crash due to overwhelming interest. Historically, since seeding began in 1979, only two teams seeded No. 5 or better had worse scoring halves than Clemson’s 13 points.
