126% Surge in Prescription Volume: Walgreens’ Robots Revolutionize Pharmacy Operations

Walgreens is expanding its use of micro-fulfillment centers, which employ robots to fill prescriptions. These centers currently serve 4,800 stores, with plans to reach over 5,000 by year’s end. They handle 40% of the prescription volume at supported pharmacies, filling around 16 million prescriptions monthly. The automation has led to significant savings, with $500 million generated by reducing excess inventory and boosting efficiency. Stores using these facilities administer 40% more vaccines than those that do not. Walgreens has seen a 126% increase in prescription volume year-over-year, now filling over 170 million prescriptions annually, with a goal to reach 180 million. The company has also reduced overall prescription fulfillment costs by nearly 13% compared to last year. New internal tools allow for real-time tracking of prescriptions, enhancing customer service. Despite these advancements, Walgreens acknowledges the need for further improvements, such as direct shipping to patients’ homes.
