23% of Sub-Saharan Africa Now Undernourished: A Statistical Overview

In sub-Saharan Africa, the prevalence of undernourishment has risen from 18% in 2015 to 23% in 2023. This increase is attributed to conflicts, economic impacts from the covid-19 pandemic, and extreme weather events due to climate change. Indigenous crops in the region, which are often more nutritious and better adapted to hot and dry conditions, have been largely overlooked by scientific research. As a result, these crops are more susceptible to diseases and pests and do not reach their full yield potential. Efforts are now underway to enhance the cultivation and utilization of these crops to combat rising hunger and provide essential nutrition to the population amidst ongoing climate challenges.
