Lions’ Defense Shines with 42% Blitz Rate in Playoffs

The 2024 NFL playoffs are underway, with the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions securing the top seeds in their respective conferences. The Lions, who have never been the NFC’s No. 1 seed before, will host the lowest-seeded wild-card winner in the divisional round. Detroit’s defense has been forced to adapt due to injuries, blitzing at a league-high 42% rate since Week 7. This strategy has been effective, with the Lions ranking second in EPA allowed per dropback when blitzing. Offensively, the Lions have been led by quarterback Jared Goff, who has earned Pro Bowl honors, and running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, along with receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, who have all surpassed 1,000 scrimmage yards this season. However, the team’s defense has been compromised by injuries to key players like Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, and Carlton Davis III. The Lions’ first game outlook includes matchups against potential opponents like the Rams, Vikings, Commanders, or Packers, against whom they have a 5-0 record this season.
