OpenAI’s Lobbying Skyrockets by 700% in 2024

OpenAI has significantly increased its lobbying efforts, spending $1.76 million in 2024, a sharp rise from the $260,000 spent in 2023. The company’s lobbying expenses in the last three months of 2024 alone reached $510,000. This increase coincides with the hiring of Meghan Dorn, a former aide to Senator Lindsey Graham, as an in-house lobbyist. OpenAI’s lobbying activities focused on two new legislative proposals: the AI Advancement and Reliability Act, aimed at establishing a government AI research center, and the Future of Artificial Intelligence Innovation Act, which would introduce shared benchmark tests for AI models. Additionally, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has been actively engaging with policymakers, proposing the construction of multiple five-gigawatt data centers to bolster U.S. AI competitiveness. These centers would consume as much electricity as New York City. The company’s policy team has also been preparing for a shift towards nuclear energy, hiring lobbyist Matthew Rimkunas, who has experience in sustainable energy and nuclear safety. Despite these efforts, OpenAI’s lobbying spending remains lower than that of its peers, with Meta leading at over $24 million in 2024.
