$5.16 Million: MLB Salaries Soar to New Heights!

Major League Baseball’s average salary reached $5,160,245 on Opening Day, marking the first time it surpassed $5 million. The New York Mets led with a payroll of $322.6 million, closely followed by the Los Angeles Dodgers at $319.5 million. Both teams spent about five times more than the Miami Marlins, who had the lowest payroll at $64.9 million. The Mets’ payroll decreased from their record $355.4 million in 2023. The average salary increased by 3.6%, up from a 1.5% rise last year but down from an 11.1% increase in 2023. The Dodgers increased their payroll by $69 million, the highest in the league, while Baltimore added $66 million. Other notable increases included Arizona ($55 million), San Diego ($47 million), Philadelphia ($41 million), and Detroit ($39 million). The Chicago White Sox cut their payroll by $60.8 million after a 121-loss season. Only five teams had payrolls under $100 million. Juan Soto’s $61.9 million salary set a new record, surpassing the previous high of $43.3 million. Of the 953 players on Opening Day, 526 earned $1 million or more, down from last year. The median salary dropped to $1.35 million from $1.5 million.
