AI Funding Soars to $42.2 Million: South Korea’s Emergency Health Tech Revolution!

South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare has revamped its 129 mobile app for medical emergencies. Launched in 2014, the app now offers new features like quick bookings for virtual consultations and sign language-based video consultations for those with speech and hearing difficulties. Users can also access emergency consultations through a new web chat feature. The existing chat feature on KakaoTalk has been improved to reduce wait times. A 24/7 chatbot now answers inquiries about health and welfare policies. In response to an impending healthcare staff shortage, South Korea is investing in digital technologies, particularly AI. Two AI-based emergency systems are in development: a regional emergency system for patient classification and transfer, and a multi-institutional real-time critical patient transfer management system. These projects, under the Korean Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, have received between $9 million and $16.5 million in funding over five years. Additionally, an AI-based clinical decision support system for predicting cardiac arrest, cardiovascular diseases, and sepsis in emergency departments has been allocated $16.7 million over five years.
