Hockey Shifts: 30-45 Seconds of Intense Breathing

The average shift in ice hockey lasts between 30 and 45 seconds, during which players skate at full speed, engage in physical play, and return to the bench exhausted. While fans take 6 to 10 breaths during this time, players take around 12 to 14. Gunnar Esiason, who has cystic fibrosis (CF), found solace in hockey despite his condition. CF affects about 40,000 people in the U.S. and 100,000 worldwide, causing severe respiratory and digestive issues. Gunnar’s health was often gauged by his ability to play hockey. His father, Boomer Esiason, supported his son’s passion for the sport, even during Gunnar’s darkest moments with CF. A new drug, Trikafta, funded by the Boomer Esiason Foundation, has dramatically improved Gunnar’s life, allowing him to play hockey without coughing or spitting up mucus. Trikafta has been effective for about 90% of CF patients, increasing life expectancy to the mid-70s. Now, Gunnar can enjoy life’s simple pleasures, like playing hockey with his children, without the constraints of CF.
