First-Ever A CinemaScore for a Horror Movie: ‘Sinners’ Breaks Records!

‘Sinners,’ a horror movie starring Michael B. Jordan, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first horror film to receive an A CinemaScore in the organization’s 47-year history. Typically, horror films struggle to achieve high CinemaScores, with a B-range being considered exceptional. The film’s success is reflected in its box office performance, grossing $45.6 million over the Easter weekend, projected to exceed $46 million. ‘Sinners’ benefited from targeted marketing strategies, including digital ads in specific zip codes, which boosted ticket sales. Warner Bros., the film’s distributor, now holds the top two spots at the box office for the Easter weekend, a feat they last accomplished in 2019. This marks the eighth time since 2000 that Warner Bros. has dominated the Easter weekend with a major release.

SINNERS launching into the top-10 all time for percentage of $$$ in IMAX, and becoming the best-performing horror film ever in that same metric, is not something I saw coming. Ryan Coogler’s viral video re: different film formats, and their respective benefits, paying dividends.

So stoked to see this, but this is more a reflection that CinemaScore is a terrible review site because you’re telling me not a single horror movie has received an A is 35 years?

Ryan Coogler’s ‘SINNERS’ is the only horror film in 35 years to receive an A CinemaScore….It’s an absolute sensation.

The SINNERS being the only horror movie to ever get an A Cinemascore thing is really freaking bizarre. Horror is like the only thing audiences actually like it seems like. And they’ve all left every horror movie of the last 35 years like “Yeah it was pretty good…” at best?

“We also forgot to mention that Sinners‘ is the only horror movie in over 35 years to get an A CinemaScore besting that of Get Out (A-) and A Quiet Place Part II (A-).”As he should have.
