Statistics reveal that a mere 0.001% of the deep seafloor has been visually explored since 1958. Researchers from the Ocean Discovery League employed two methods to estimate global deep seafloor observation over the past seven decades. The dive-based method suggests a maximum visual seabed coverage of 2130 km². In contrast, the time-based method estimates a coverage of 3823 km². The Earth’s total surface area spans 510 million km², with the seafloor accounting for 360 million km², or approximately 71%. Of this ocean area, 93% is deep seafloor, which equates to about 335.7 million km² or 66% of the Earth’s total surface area. These figures underscore the vastness of the deep sea and the minimal extent to which it has been explored.

THE DEEP OCEAN IS BASICALLY A MYSTERY WE HAVE ONLY SEEN 0.001 PERCENT OF IT
Scientists just revealed we have explored less of the deep ocean than your cat has explored under the couch.
Covering 66 percent of Earth’s surface, this underwater world remains almost entirely unseen.

The #DeepSea makes up 90% of the marine environment, yet just 5% of the ocean is estimated to have been explored.
There is so much to discover in the #DeepSea, but what we know is that it is critical for the functioning of our planet.
