Falcons’ 56-Yard Miss: Timeout Decision Could Have Changed Everything

In a critical moment against the Commanders, Atlanta Falcons coach Raheem Morris opted not to call a timeout after a key first-down catch by Michael Penix Jr. to Darnell Mooney, leaving 34 seconds on the clock. This decision led to a rushed 56-yard field goal attempt by Riley Patterson, who has been with the team for only two weeks. Patterson’s kick fell short, sending the game into overtime where the Commanders won 30-24. The Falcons had two timeouts remaining but chose to keep the clock running. Penix threw an incomplete pass on the next play, and after a series of penalties, the Falcons were positioned for the long field goal attempt. Patterson’s career-long kick is 53 yards. The Falcons now stand at 8-8, needing a win against the Carolina Panthers and a loss by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the New Orleans Saints to secure a playoff spot.
