Consumer Sentiment Plummets to 50.8: The Lowest in Three Years!

The University of Michigan’s recent survey revealed a sharp decline in U.S. consumer sentiment, dropping to 50.8 from 57.0. This figure is the lowest in three years and approaches levels seen during the 2020 Covid shutdowns. Inflation expectations for the next year have surged to 6.7%, the highest since 1981, up from 5% the previous month. In response, investors have been selling off long-term U.S. government bonds and the dollar. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped above 4.55%, increasing by over 50 basis points in a week. The dollar index fell below 100, marking a three-year low. Meanwhile, gold reached a new record high of $3,240 per ounce. U.S. stocks showed less volatility, with the Nasdaq up by 0.6%. In the cryptocurrency market, bitcoin rose 4% to just over $82,000, and the CoinDesk 20 Index increased by 3%. Altcoins like Solana’s SOL and Avalanche’s AVAX led with 6% gains.
