When over 4,000 pages vanished from the CDC website, researchers turned to the Internet Archive (IA) to preserve and track the lost public health data. IA’s crawlers have been capturing snapshots of the internet for years, allowing comparisons between current and historical website versions. This tool proved invaluable when President Trump’s executive orders led to a rapid purge of CDC content. An anonymous user, “SheWhoExists,” uploaded many of the previously public datasets to IA on January 31. Virologist Angela Rasmussen and her team downloaded the entire CDC website within days, creating a public resource that combines current CDC information with the deleted datasets. IA’s continuous updates make it an effective tool for monitoring future changes to government websites. The CDC is currently overhauling its site to comply with two executive orders from January 20, which focus on removing certain language and altering employment practices.
