99% Drop: Sweden’s Land-Based Casinos Vanish as Online Gambling Soars

In a significant shift, Sweden has voted to abolish land-based casino gambling, marking the end of an era for the country’s physical casinos. The decision, influenced by declining profitability and visitor numbers, will lead to the closure of the last remaining casino, Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm. This casino, operated by the state-owned Svenska Spel, once had four locations across Sweden. The sites in Sundsvall, Gothenburg, and Malmo closed in 2020 and January 2024, respectively. The Stockholm casino employs just under 240 people. The new ruling, effective from January 1, 2026, will prevent the issuance of new casino licenses. While the exact closure date for the Stockholm casino remains uncertain, its closure will end the presence of physical casinos in Sweden. This move contrasts with Brazil’s plans to legalize land-based casinos. Meanwhile, Sweden’s gambling landscape has shifted online, with new laws introduced in January 2019 opening the market to private operators.
