Thailand’s ambitious plan to become a top Asian casino destination involves a 500-billion-baht (US$14.9 billion) investment. The government has chosen four provinces: Bangkok, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, and Phuket for this initiative. The project aims to attract over 50 million tourists annually. It includes the development of four entertainment complexes featuring five-star hotels, shopping malls, amusement parks, and more. These complexes are expected to create at least 40,000 new jobs. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects Thailand’s GDP to reach US$545.3 billion by 2025. However, a recent survey indicates that 59% of Thais oppose casino development. In response, less than 10% of each complex will be dedicated to casinos. The government has postponed the Entertainment Complex Bill to address public concerns and is proposing measures against money laundering and youth gambling.
