64 Homes Built to Withstand Wildfires: A Statistical Breakthrough in Fire-Resilient Construction

In Escondido, California, KB Home has completed a groundbreaking development of 64 single-family homes designed to meet the wildfire resilience standards set by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). These homes are engineered to resist ignition from flying embers, flames, and radiant heat. Currently, about 20 of these homes have been sold, and three homeowners have already moved in. The homes, priced between $1 million and the low millions, feature fire-resistant materials such as stucco, fiber cement, and tempered glass. They are spaced 10 feet apart to slow fire spread and include a 5-foot buffer of low-combustible vegetation. This project marks the first time a large production builder has fully committed to constructing an entire community to these stringent standards. During the Palisades Fire in January, homes built to similar standards survived while others were destroyed, highlighting the potential effectiveness of such construction.
