Loud TV Commercials Surge: FCC Receives Over 1,700 Complaints in 2024

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has noted a significant increase in complaints about the volume of TV commercials, with at least 1,700 grievances in 2024 alone. Despite the CALM Act, which mandates that commercials should not exceed the average volume of the programs they accompany, the number of complaints has risen from approximately 750 in 2022 to 825 in 2023. The FCC’s rules, effective since December 2012, aim to ensure consistency in loudness and prevent signal clipping. However, some advertisers appear to be exploiting loopholes by starting commercials at a high volume to grab attention before lowering it. The FCC is now seeking public and industry feedback on the effectiveness of the CALM Act and potential future actions to address this ongoing issue.
