A recent analysis reveals that over half of the countries (70 out of 137) that have submitted plans to the UN for meeting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (MMB) goals have not committed to protecting 30% of their land and sea by 2030. This commitment, known as the 30×30 target, was agreed upon by nearly all nations in December 2022. The analysis shows that these countries, which include biodiversity-rich nations like Indonesia, Peru, and South Africa, as well as developed countries like Finland, Norway, and Switzerland, represent over a third of the Earth’s land surface. Some countries aim to protect less than 30% of their territory, while others have not set a specific numerical target. The research highlights a lack of ambition in national conservation commitments, suggesting that the global 30×30 goal is currently off track.
