Eli Lilly has introduced higher doses of its weight loss drug Zepbound in single-dose vials at a significantly reduced price. The 7.5 milligram and 10 milligram vials are now available for $499 per month for the first prescription and refills within 45 days. Otherwise, they cost $599 and $699, respectively. This pricing strategy aims to make the drug more accessible to patients without insurance coverage, including those with Medicare. The company also lowered the price of lower-dose vials by $50, setting the 2.5 milligram vial at $349 and the 5 milligram vial at $499. These vials require patients to use a syringe and needle for self-injection, unlike the autoinjector pens which cost around $1,000 per month before insurance. Eli Lilly’s initiative through LillyDirect, launched in January 2024, has seen a positive uptake, with around 10% of new obesity treatment patients using Zepbound through this self-pay pharmacy.
