AI Regulation Could Slash Musicians’ Earnings by 90%

Paul McCartney, with a personal fortune of $1.25 billion, has voiced concerns over proposed AI regulation changes. He warns that if these laws pass, allowing AI developers to use creators’ content without explicit opt-out, musicians could struggle financially. McCartney highlights that young songwriters might not own their creations, potentially losing out on earnings as AI could exploit their work. He stresses the importance of protecting artists, stating, “The money’s going somewhere, somebody’s getting paid, so why shouldn’t it be the guy who sat down and wrote Yesterday?” This comes after McCartney and Ringo Starr used AI to create “Now and Then,” the Beatles’ final song, which was critically acclaimed and nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2023.
