$293M and Counting: Apple’s F1 Film Surpasses Expectations

Apple’s foray into the world of film has yielded a surprising success with its documentary-style movie about Formula 1 racing, “F1: The Movie”. With a global gross of $293 million, it has surpassed even the most optimistic predictions. A significant chunk of this revenue comes from IMAX theaters, which accounted for $60 million (20% of the total) globally and $27.4 million domestically (25% of US/Canada ticket sales). This impressive performance is all the more remarkable considering the film’s relatively modest production budget of $200-300 million and marketing costs of $100 million.

What’s even more striking is that Apple, with a market capitalization of $3 trillion, primarily generates revenue from its tech devices, not entertainment. The company’s Eddy Cue has openly stated that they entered the film business for profit, rather than artistic expression. Despite this pragmatic approach, “F1: The Movie” has gained momentum and even won the best picture award at the Oscars in 2021.

This AI picture came in on my X/Twitter feed. While I admire the creativity, thanks to the heavens that Apple Original Films cast Brad Pitt in that F1 lead role rather than me. F1 is going to sell a whole lot more tickets — because Brad Pitt is so good in this movie. Go see him!
