Neuralink’s Blindsight device has successfully restored vision in monkeys for several years. The company plans to conduct its first human implant by the end of 2025. Blindsight, which received FDA breakthrough device designation last September, involves implanting a microelectrode array into the visual cortex. This array activates neurons to provide visual images. Initially, the vision will be low-resolution, similar to Atari graphics, but it has the potential to evolve into superhuman vision. The device aims to help those who have lost both eyes and their optic nerve, as well as individuals blind from birth, as long as their visual cortex remains intact. Future enhancements could enable vision in infrared, ultraviolet, or even radar wavelengths. Neuralink also filed trademark applications for “Telepathy,” “Blindsight,” and “Telekinesis” with the USPTO in early March.
