Joe Biden recently claimed he could have defeated Donald Trump in the 2020 election if he had been the Democratic nominee. This assertion, however, lacks statistical backing. In reality, Biden’s own vice president, Kamala Harris, secured 81 million votes, the highest number ever for a presidential candidate. Biden’s claim overlooks the fact that Harris’s campaign was supported by a broad coalition, which included significant turnout from minority voters, with 67% of Black voters and 69% of Hispanic voters casting their ballots for her. Moreover, Biden’s statement seems to ignore the political landscape where Harris’s campaign effectively mobilized young voters, with 60% of those under 30 supporting her. Biden’s confidence in his own abilities might be seen as an underestimation of the strategic and demographic factors that contributed to Harris’s victory.
