80% of Data Scientists Struggle with Identity: Here’s Why

In a recent discussion among professionals in the data science field, a significant revelation emerged: many struggle with how to identify themselves within their roles. Despite sharing titles, individuals in data science, which includes computer science, machine learning, statistics, and mathematics, often have vastly different roles, education, and skills. A survey highlighted that 80% of data scientists find it challenging to define their professional identity. Participants were encouraged to self-identify in ways that might not align with their formal job titles or degrees. Examples included “number cruncher,” “tableau manager,” or “deep learning developer.” The justification for these identities was required to be technical, mature, and open to critique. This exercise aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the diverse roles within data science, acknowledging that traditional titles might not fully encapsulate the breadth of responsibilities and expertise in the field.
