75% of Filipino Youth Get News from Social Media: The Power of Digital Influence

Statistics reveal that 75% of the Filipino population, particularly the youth and the very poor, rely on social media platforms like Facebook for their news. This insight comes from filmmaker Lauren Greenfield’s work, which explores the impact of social media and the manipulation of narratives. Greenfield’s documentary “The Kingmaker” examines the political resurgence of the Marcos family in the Philippines, highlighting how social media played a crucial role in reshaping public perception and history. The film also broke the news of a secret political alliance between Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and former President Rodrigo Duterte, which led to Marcos Jr.’s presidency in 2022. Duterte was arrested in 2022 and extradited to The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity related to his anti-drug campaign, which resulted in thousands of deaths. Greenfield’s other work, the docuseries “Social Studies,” focuses on the effects of social media on American youth, emphasizing the universal pressures felt by teenagers globally.
