70% of Kaggle Competitions Use Anonymous Features: Here’s Why It Matters

In Kaggle competitions, 70% of the challenges involve predicting outcomes using anonymous features. These features, often labeled with uninformative names like “V1,” are transformed to protect sensitive data. While anonymization is crucial for safeguarding information, it can strip away the intuitive elements that make machine learning problems engaging and solvable. Participants in these competitions often resort to mechanically testing various feature transformations and combinations. The question remains whether these methods are effective for real-world applications. Understanding the impact of anonymization on machine learning could lead to better approaches in handling such data sets.

No it’s anonymous. He does not know who submits. The only people who can get access to that info are the police through a court order and they must have good reason for such an order to be granted. The site has to adhere to its privacy policies.
