$65 Million in Popcorn Bucket Sales: The New Movie Theater Craze

Movie theaters are now making big bucks from popcorn buckets. AMC Entertainment, which didn’t sell any merchandise three years ago, made about $65 million last year from novelty popcorn buckets, drink sippers, and T-shirts. The trend started with AMC’s release of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” in October 2023, selling an incredible number of popcorn buckets. Other chains like Cinemark, Marcus, Regal, and B&B Theatres have followed suit, using these items to boost concession sales and create urgency for opening weekends. Theaters have found that these unique popcorn buckets add value to the moviegoing experience, with some selling out immediately and fetching high prices on secondary markets. For instance, the “Dune: Part Two” bucket sold for $24.99 but resold for between $50 and $210 on eBay. Theaters are now more proactive in creating these items, with AMC planning to significantly increase quantities in 2025, ordering 100,000 units or more.
