Isomorphic Labs, a drug design company, secured $600 million in its first external funding round. Thrive Capital led the investment, with contributions from GV and Alphabet. Launched in 2021 with Google DeepMind, Isomorphic unveiled AlphaFold 3, an AI model developed to predict the structure and interactions of proteins, DNA, RNA, and ligands. The company has also developed an AI drug design engine that spans multiple therapeutic areas and drug modalities. The funds will support the advancement of their drug design programs and aim to deliver biomedical breakthroughs. In February, Isomorphic expanded its collaboration with Novartis, adding up to three new research programs. Last year, they partnered with Eli Lilly, receiving a $45 million upfront payment to discover small molecule therapeutics. Google DeepMind introduced AlphaProteo, an AI system trained on the Protein Data Bank to design high-strength proteins.

Sir Demis is speaking in Davos. He expects clinical trials for AI-designed drugs to begin this year. He said Isomorphic Labs, which he founded in 2021, is working on shortening the drug discovery process from a decade or more to ‘weeks or months.’
